ONE DAY MINDO BIRD WATCHING TOUR
Birdwatching in Mindo, Ecuador: A Cloud Forest Paradise
General Overview
Discover Mindo Ecuador, our most popular Ecuador bird watching tour and one of the world’s top destinations for birdwatching and nature photography. Nestled in the heart of the Andean cloud forest, Mindo is home to an astonishing variety of hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, and rare Antpittas, making it a must-visit for bird enthusiasts.
We will start the day early, departing Quito at 4:30 am for a short drive to Paz de las Aves Refuge, one of the world's most renowned birdwatching sites, especially for Antpitta observation. We will witness the fascinating display of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock from a hide near a lek. With luck, we may also spot the Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl in the canopy, the Rufous-bellied Nighthawk perched on a branch, or even the elusive Dark-backed Wood-Quail on the forest floor.
The morning will be filled with exhilarating birdwatching as we seek out species like the Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, and Giant Antpitta, each requiring careful tracking in their respective territories. After these encounters, we will enjoy breakfast at 8:00 am at the reserve’s restaurant before continuing our search for three additional Antpitta species: Ocher-breasted, Moustached, and Chestnut-crowned Antpittas. Along the trails, there is also a possibility of spotting the Ocellated Tapaculo, Golden-headed Quetzal, Olivaceous Piha, Toucan Barbet, Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager, Scaled and Orange-breasted Fruiteaters, and a variety of vibrant tanagers and hummingbirds.
By late morning, we will depart for Sachatamia Lodge, arriving in time for lunch. This ecolodge is a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers, with gardens and feeders attracting a dazzling array of hummingbirds, including the White-necked Jacobin, Green-crowned Woodnymph, White-whiskered Hermit, Brown Violet-ear, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Andean Emerald, and Booted Racket-tail.
In the afternoon, we will explore the lower forest trails (at 1200 masl) to search for Pale-mandibled Aracari, Choco Toucan, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Masked Trogon, and other treasures of the Chocó region. We then return to Quito
This action-packed day will provide incredible birding opportunities, from elusive Antpittas and colorful tanagers to majestic toucans and night birds, ensuring a truly unforgettable experience.
