For our birdwatching tours, we collaborate with Francisco Sornoza and his team, one of the most renowned guides in the field. His expertise and deep knowledge of Ecuador’s birdlife will make your experience truly exceptional.
Ornithologist Francisco Sornoza is renowned for his discovery of the Blue-throated Hillstar hummingbird in Ecuador's Cerro de Arcos region in 2017. This significant find has been highlighted in various publications, including an article by the National Audubon Society.
With 32 years of experience in bird research in mainland Ecuador, Francisco Sornoza is a distinguished figure in the ornithological community. He was a national counterpart in the creation of the "Birds of Ecuador" guide (by Paul Greenfield and R.S. Ridgely), collaborating with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (USA) and the current National Institute of Biodiversity (INABIO-Ecuador).
Francisco has discovered several new bird species, including the remarkable Jocotoco Antpitta (Grallaria ridgelyi) and the Blue-Throated Hillstar (Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus), the latter in 2018.
He served as the President of the Jocotoco Conservation Foundation from 2000 to 2004 and as its Executive Director from 2005 to 2011, during which he established 11 private reserves to protect Ecuador's endemic and emblematic bird species, preserving nearly the entire ornithological heritage of the country.
In 2019, Francisco was honored by the illustrious Metropolitan Municipality of Quito with the Marieta de Veintimilla Honorary Mention for his contributions to environmental conservation in Quito and Ecuador.
