HIKING THE QUILOTOA LOOP

A Journey Through Ecuador’s Andean Highlands

General Overview

The Quilotoa Loop is a mesmerizing network of hiking trails in Ecuador’s Cotopaxi province, just southwest of Quito. This journey takes you through the heart of the Andean highlands, offering breathtaking landscapes, vibrant indigenous villages, and the spectacular Laguna Quilotoa—a turquoise crater lake surrounded by rugged cliffs.

Contrary to its name, the Quilotoa Loop is a 22-mile (35 km) point-to-point hike rather than a circular route. To “close the loop,” travelers typically rely on road transport. While you can hike in either direction, most adventurers begin in Sigchos, trekking southward to end their journey with the awe-inspiring views of Quilotoa Lake.

This three-day adventure is designed to blend stunning natural scenery with rich cultural encounters. Although the daily distances are manageable, the high-altitude trails and undulating terrain add a rewarding challenge, with plenty of time to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Our bilingual Guide will take you down the path winds through fields of corn and farmland, descending into a lush valley. A concrete bridge leads across the river, offering stunning views before a gentle ascent to the quaint village of Isinliví.

Here, you’ll stay at the warm and welcoming Lulu Llama Lodge, known for its cozy atmosphere and inclusive meals. Optional activities include horseback riding and visits to local farms or a men’s woodworking collective, giving you an authentic taste of Andean life.

Day 3: Chugchilán to Quilotoa

  • Distance: 6.8 miles (11 km)

  • Walking Time: ~5 hours
